💧 Watering
Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. Gerberas are very sensitive to crown rot; never pour water directly into the center of the plant where the leaves emerge. Instead, water around the edges of the pot. In winter, be extra careful—if the soil stays wet during a humid Maltese “Grigal” wind, the plant can collapse overnight.
☀️ Light
They love bright, direct morning sun. However, the afternoon sun in Malta from June to September is often too harsh and will cause the flowers to wilt and the leaves to scorch. A spot that gets 5–6 hours of morning light and then moves into shade for the afternoon is the “sweet spot” for continuous blooming.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
Features a basal rosette of large, fuzzy, deeply lobed green leaves. The flowers sit on thick, leafless stems. Because the leaves are slightly hairy, they can trap moisture, which leads to powdery mildew (a white dusty coating). Ensure there is plenty of space between your pots for air to circulate.
🪴 Potting Mix
Requires a light, very well-draining mix. Use a high-quality potting soil and add a good amount of perlite or coarse sand. If you are planting them in the ground in Malta, ensure the soil isn’t heavy clay; they need the water to move away from their roots quickly.
🌿 Fertilizer
Gerberas are “hungry” plants. Use a liquid fertilizer high in potassium and magnesium (like a tomato or rose feed) every two weeks during the flowering season. This keeps the colors vivid and the stems strong enough to hold up those heavy heads.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Safe! Gerberas are non-toxic to cats and dogs. They are one of the best choices for a pet-friendly household or garden.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Excellent! Gerberas were a top performer in NASA’s clean air study. They are particularly good at removing trichloroethylene and benzene from the air, and unlike many plants, they continue to release oxygen at night, making them a great choice for a bright bedroom.
