💧 Watering
The Pericallis is a thirsty drama queen.
The Routine: The soil must be kept consistently moist. Unlike succulents, if the soil dries out even slightly, the entire plant will wilt flat against the pot.
The Recovery: If it wilts, water it immediately; it usually “pops” back up within an hour.
The Danger: Avoid getting water on the leaves or the center of the crown, as the dense foliage can easily trap moisture and lead to botrytis (grey mold) in the humid Maltese winter air.
☀️ Light
In the Maltese climate, this plant is strictly for full shade or bright, indirect light.
Outdoors: Place it on a north-facing balcony or a shaded porch. Direct sunlight—even the “weak” winter sun—will scorch the thin, delicate leaves.
Indoors: Keep it in the coolest room of the house near a bright window, but away from any heaters or AC units.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
It grows in a compact, rounded mound (usually 20–40 cm tall and wide). The leaves are large, heart-shaped, and slightly fuzzy. The flowers bloom in a dense “canopy” that completely hides the foliage when in full glory.
🪴 Potting Mix
Requires a rich, peat-based potting compost that can hold onto moisture without becoming a swamp. If you bought one from a supermarket, it is likely in a very small pot; moving it into a slightly larger ceramic pot can help keep the roots cool and the moisture levels more stable.
🌿 Fertilizer
Because they are usually sold in full bloom, they have already used a lot of energy. To keep the flowers lasting for weeks, use a high-potassium liquid fertilizer (like a tomato or rose feed) every 7–10 days.
❌🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Toxic. Pericallis contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which are harmful to the liver if ingested by cats or dogs. Since the flowers are so bright and tempting, keep them on a high table or plant stand.
