Description
💧 Watering
While young plants need regular watering to establish roots, mature specimens are highly drought-resistant and handle Malta’s dry summers with ease. In pots, ensure the soil dries out halfway before watering to avoid waterlogging the roots.
☀️ Light
It performs best in full sun to partial shade, though a sunnier spot will encourage a more prolific harvest of its decorative fruits. It is exceptionally hardy and can withstand the salty winds common in Maltese coastal areas.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
This slow-growing shrub features leathery, dark green leaves and attractive reddish bark that peels as it ages. It can be easily pruned to maintain a compact shape or trained into a small, elegant tree.
🪴 Potting Mix
The Strawberry Tree is unique because it thrives in the alkaline, calcareous soils common in Malta but prefers a well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral mix. Use a high-quality potting soil amended with grit or perlite to ensure excellent drainage.
🌿 Fertilizer
Apply a slow-release, balanced fertilizer in early spring to support new growth. Generally, it is a low-maintenance plant that doesn’t require heavy feeding once it has settled into its environment.
✔🐕🐈 Pet Safety
The Arbutus unedo is generally considered non-toxic to dogs and cats. The fruits are edible for humans (though often bland) and are not known to be harmful to pets.

🌬️ Air Purifying
As a hardy evergreen, it is excellent at capturing dust and carbon dioxide, contributing to cleaner air on terraces and in garden spaces. Its dense canopy is particularly effective at acting as a natural windbreak and air filter.
