Description

The name “Mammola” (meaning ‘Mother Bud’) refers to the superior, large, central artichoke that grows first.

No Spines or Choke – Completely spineless with virtually no internal hair (fieno), meaning almost no waste and easy preparation.

Perfect for eating whole! Essential for Carciofi alla Romana and the famous deep-fried Carciofi alla Giudia. Famed for its sweet, delicate flavour and incredibly tender heart, even the stem is delicious.

Once established, your plant will provide an annual harvest for 3 to 4 years (or more!).

The large, silvery-green leaves add a stunning, Mediterranean focal point to any garden or large container.

Planting Guide: The artichoke plant thrives during the cool, wet months and rests during the hot summer. The goal is to transplant your seedling so it establishes well before the cold arrives and starts producing in winter/spring.

Location: Choose a spot with Full Sun (South/South-West facing) and shelter from strong winds. Year-Round

Soil: Dig deeply (at least 50 cm) and incorporate plenty of compost or aged manure. Excellent drainage is non-negotiable. Artichokes hate soggy roots! Before Transplanting

Transplanting: Carefully move your seedling to the ground or a very large pot (minimum 60cm wide). Artichokes are HUGE, so space them 1 metre apart!

Watering Water deeply and consistently, especially right after transplanting and throughout the dry, hot late summer and autumn. Use drip irrigation for efficiency.

Feeding: Apply a balanced fertiliser (high in potash and phosphorus) regularly as the plant is a heavy feeder. During active growth.

Harvest: You can expect your first main artichokes (the Mammola) when the weather cools down.
First Year Harvest: Late Autumn/Early Winter (approx. 5-7 months after transplanting).
Main Harvest: February to May in subsequent years, when the plant is fully mature.

Tip: Harvest the bud when it is plump, round, and firm, and the bracts (leaves) are still tightly closed. Cut the stem a few inches below the bud. Leaving a bud to flower will look beautiful, but it stops the plant from producing more delicious side buds!
