Description

💧 Watering
Water deeply and regularly, especially during the hot, dry Maltese summer. It is important to water at the base of the plant rather than over the leaves to prevent fungal issues like powdery mildew, which can be common in the humid Mediterranean air.

☀️ Light
It performs best in full sun, which encourages a massive flush of flowers and keeps the plant robust. It can tolerate partial shade, but you will notice fewer blooms and a more “leggy” growth habit.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
This is a deciduous, sprawling shrub or climber with bright green, serrated leaves. It is a very fast grower and can quickly take over a space if not managed. Unlike many modern roses, it produces clusters of numerous tiny flowers followed by small, decorative red hips in the autumn.

🪴 Potting Mix
While it prefers being in the ground, it can be grown in very large, deep containers. Use a heavy, nutrient-rich potting mix with good water retention. It is tolerant of various soil types, including the alkaline limestone soils common in Malta.

🌿 Fertilizer
Feed with a specialized rose fertilizer in early spring and again after the first major flowering. Adding a layer of organic mulch around the base will help retain moisture and provide a steady supply of nutrients throughout the season.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Roses are generally non-toxic to dogs and cats. However, the Rosa multiflora has curved thorns along its stems which can cause physical injury or scratches if a pet tries to run through the bush.

🌬️ Air Purifying
While not an indoor purifier, its massive volume of foliage and flowers is excellent for capturing CO2 and supporting local pollinators like bees and butterflies. It acts as a beautiful, fragrant natural screen that improves the “micro-climate” of a garden or terrace.
