Description
💧 Watering
While drought-tolerant once established, it prefers regular watering during the peak of the Maltese summer to keep its foliage lush and ensure a heavy bloom. In winter, the local rainfall is usually sufficient. If kept in a pot, ensure it dries out slightly between waterings, but don’t let the root ball turn into a “brick.”
☀️ Light
Requires full sun. It needs maximum light to produce those iconic red spikes. If planted in the shade, it will become leggy and rarely flower. It loves the heat and handles the intense reflection from Maltese globigerina limestone walls without a problem.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
Features narrow, leathery, lance-shaped leaves that are a bright copper-green when young, maturing to a deep emerald. It has a slightly weeping, elegant habit and can be grown as a large shrub or pruned into a small, decorative tree.
🪴 Potting Mix
Thrives in a well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil. While it is more tolerant of Malta’s alkaline (limestone) soil than other Callistemon varieties, it appreciates the addition of some peat or organic matter to help balance the pH and retain a little moisture.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring and again in late summer. Since it can be prone to iron deficiency (yellowing leaves) in our calcareous Maltese soil, an occasional dose of iron chelates will keep it looking deep green and healthy.
✔🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Good news for pet owners: Callistemon is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. It is a safe, bird-attracting choice for a family garden. However, be advised that the consumption of any plant material may cause vomiting and gastrointestinal upset for dogs and cats. Sherries will not be held accountable to any symptom. If you believe that your animal is ill or may have ingested a poisonous substance, please contact a vet immediately.
🌬️ Air Purifying
As an outdoor shrub, it isn’t an indoor purifier, but it is a biodiversity hero. In Malta, its nectar-rich “brushes” are a primary food source for bees and various local birds, helping to support the local ecosystem in urban areas.
