Description
💧 Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Ranunculus are “thirsty” while they are growing and blooming. In the breezy Maltese spring, the soil in pots can dry out quickly, so check it daily. However, avoid getting water on the foliage or the “crown” (the center of the plant), as this can lead to rot or powdery mildew.
☀️ Light
They love full sun to very bright, indirect light. In Malta, they perform best in the cool sunshine of late winter and early spring. As soon as the temperature hits the mid-20s (usually by May), the plant will naturally start to go dormant. Place them on a south or east-facing balcony for the best blooms.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
Features parsley-like, mounded green foliage. The flower stalks rise from the center, carrying heavy, globe-like blooms. Because the flower heads are so dense and heavy, they might need a small bamboo stake if your balcony is prone to the strong “Majjistral” (Northwest) wind.
🪴 Potting Mix
Requires rich but very well-draining soil. Use a high-quality potting compost mixed with a bit of perlite. Because the tubers (which look like tiny bunches of bananas) are prone to rot, ensuring the water can drain away freely is the most important factor for success.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed with a high-potassium liquid fertilizer (like a tomato or rose feed) every two weeks once the first flower buds appear. This helps the plant produce more blooms and keeps the colors vivid.
❌🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Toxic. Ranunculus contain protoanemonin, which is irritating to the mouth and digestive tract of cats and dogs. It’s best to keep these on a high table or plant stand where curious pets won’t try to nibble the leaves.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Primarily an ornamental seasonal plant. While they don’t filter air like a large palm, they are world-famous as cut flowers. One or two stems in a vase can last for up to 10 days, brightening the air and mood of any room.
