Description
💧 Watering
Water thoroughly only when the soil has completely dried out. Lavender is a true Mediterranean soul that thrives on neglect and handles drought effortlessly. The golden rule: It is far better to under-water than to over-water. Constant dampness or sitting water will cause the root system to rot within days.
☀️ Light
It demands absolute full, baking, direct sunlight. It requires a minimum of six to eight hours of intense sun daily to fuel its heavy oil production and vivid purple blooms. It handles the most intense Maltese summer heatwaves beautifully without dropping a leaf.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
It grows in a compact, bushy, upright mound, reaching a neat 25 to 30 centimeters in height. The narrow, needle-like foliage emerges a striking silvery-gray before maturing to a soft green. Both the leaves and the flowers are intensely aromatic, releasing a rich, soothing lavender scent when brushed. Trim the plant back by a third right after its summer flowering to keep it bushy and prevent it from becoming woody at the base.
🪴 Potting Mix
Superb, sharp drainage and aeration are non-negotiable. It thrives in poor, gravelly, or sandy soils and absolutely loves neutral to highly alkaline limestone conditions. If planting in pots, use a lightweight potting soil heavily mixed with coarse sand, perlite, or gravel. Avoid organic-rich, heavy clays that trap moisture.
🌿 Fertilizer
Requires almost no feeding. Lavender naturally prefers nutrient-poor soil. A tiny handful of slow-release fertilizer or a light scattering of compost in early spring is more than enough. Over-fertilizing will result in weak, floppy green growth and zero flowers.
⚠️🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Toxic to pets. Lavender contains small amounts of linalool and linalyl acetate. While a tiny nibble won’t cause severe harm, if dogs or cats ingest large quantities of the foliage, it can lead to mild digestive upset, nausea, and vomiting. Keep potted containers on elevated stands or sunny ledge walls.
🌬️ Air Purifying
An exceptional outdoor pollinator magnet and natural pest deterrent. The high concentration of essential oils in its foliage naturally repels annoying mosquitoes, flies, and fleas from seating areas, while its vibrant purple spears attract a beautiful array of local bees and butterflies.
