Description
Musa basjoo, commonly known as Japanese Banana, is a fast-growing tropical-looking plant admired for its enormous, lush green leaves. Perfect for creating a dramatic tropical atmosphere in gardens, patios and large containers.
💧 Watering
Water regularly and generously during active growth. Keep the soil lightly moist during Malta’s hot summers, avoiding waterlogging.
☀️ Light
Prefers full sun to partial shade. In Malta, protect young plants from intense afternoon summer sun and strong winds.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
Produces large, paddle-shaped green leaves on tall, sturdy pseudostems. Grows quickly in warm weather and may produce small, generally inedible bananas when mature.
🪴 Potting Mix
Prefers rich, fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost. Mulching helps retain moisture during summer.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed every 2–3 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer to support its vigorous growth.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. However, eating large amounts of foliage may cause mild digestive upset.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Primarily valued for its spectacular tropical foliage and ability to provide shade rather than proven air-purifying properties.
