Description

Stenocereus beneckei is a fascinating collector’s cactus, admired for its distinctive chalky-white coating, upright growth and beautifully ribbed stems. Often known as the Ghost Cactus, this unusual species develops a striking silvery-white appearance that contrasts beautifully with its dark spines, making it an eye-catching addition to any cactus collection.

Native to Mexico, this slow-growing cactus is particularly prized for its unusual colouring and architectural form. Its stems are naturally covered in a protective white, powdery coating that helps shield the plant from intense sunlight. With its sculptural appearance and drought tolerance, Stenocereus beneckei is an excellent choice for enthusiasts looking for something distinctive.

Plant Details

Botanical Name: Stenocereus beneckei
Common Name: Ghost Cactus • White Ghost Cactus
Plant Type: Cactus
Growth Rate: Slow to Moderate
Growth Habit: Upright, columnar, branching with age
Mature Size: Approximately 1–2 metres tall in suitable outdoor conditions, potentially larger with age; remains smaller when container grown

Care Guide

☀️ Light:

Prefers very bright light with several hours of direct sunlight. In Malta, gradually acclimatise young plants to strong sunlight and provide some protection from intense summer afternoon sun until established.

💧 Watering:

Water thoroughly during the active growing season, allowing the compost to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering significantly during winter and avoid prolonged wet conditions.

🌱 Soil:

Use a very free-draining cactus and succulent compost with added mineral grit, pumice or coarse sand to ensure excellent drainage.

🌡 Temperature:

Best grown between 15–30°C. Protect from frost and prolonged temperatures below 5°C, particularly when the compost is damp.

🌸 Flowering

Mature specimens may produce attractive tubular flowers in shades of cream to pale pink, typically opening during the evening or night. Flowering is uncommon in young container-grown plants, which are primarily admired for their unusual white stems.

Pet Safety: 🐾 Use Caution Around Pets

Reliable species-specific toxicity information for Stenocereus beneckei is limited. However, its sharp spines can cause injury if touched or chewed. Keep out of reach of curious pets and young children.

Good to Know

The most distinctive feature of Stenocereus beneckei is its natural white, powdery coating, which gives the cactus its characteristic ghostly appearance. This protective layer helps reflect sunlight and reduce moisture loss in its native dry environment.

Unlike variegated cacti, which develop pale colouring because of reduced chlorophyll, the white appearance of this species is primarily caused by a natural waxy coating over its green stems.

Avoid rubbing or wiping the white coating, as it can be damaged or removed, leaving visible marks on the plant.

As the cactus matures, it gradually develops additional branches, creating an increasingly sculptural specimen with a distinctive silvery-white appearance.
