Description

Blackberry ‘Navaho’ is a compact, upright, thornless blackberry variety producing glossy black fruits with a pleasantly sweet flavour. Its manageable growth and lack of thorns make it particularly convenient for home gardens and containers, although in Malta it benefits from reliable watering and some protection during extreme summer heat.

💧 Watering

Keep the soil consistently moist during active growth, flowering, and fruit development. Regular deep watering is particularly important during Malta’s hot, dry spring and summer months. A layer of organic mulch around the root zone can help conserve moisture and keep the roots cooler. Avoid waterlogging.

☀️ Light

Grow in full sun to partial shade. Good sunlight encourages flowering and sweet, well-ripened fruit, but in Malta a position with morning sun and some protection from the strongest afternoon summer heat can be beneficial. This is especially useful for container-grown plants.

🍃 Foliage / Growth

‘Navaho’ has a relatively compact, upright growth habit and produces sturdy, thornless canes, making harvesting and maintenance easier than with traditional blackberry varieties. White to pale-pink flowers are followed by berries that ripen from red to glossy black.

Fruit is generally produced on second-year canes. After harvesting, remove the canes that have fruited at ground level and retain healthy new canes for the following season. Although ‘Navaho’ is more upright than many blackberries, providing a simple support or trellis can help keep the plant neat and manageable.

🪴 Potting Mix

Plant in fertile, organic-rich, well-draining soil that retains consistent moisture. Incorporating compost or well-rotted organic matter will improve soil structure and water retention. For containers, choose a large pot with good drainage and use a high-quality potting mix suitable for fruiting plants.

🌿 Fertilizer

Apply a balanced fertilizer or well-rotted compost in late winter or early spring as new growth begins. A fertilizer formulated for fruiting plants can be used as flowering and fruit development begin. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage vigorous leafy growth at the expense of fruit production.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety

Blackberries are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, and the ripe fruit itself is not considered poisonous. However, pets should not be encouraged to eat large quantities, as excessive fruit may cause digestive upset. ‘Navaho’ is thornless, making it a particularly convenient variety for gardens shared with pets.

🌬️ Air Purifying

Blackberry ‘Navaho’ is primarily valued as an edible fruiting plant rather than for specific air-purifying properties. Its flowers provide pollen and nectar for bees and other beneficial insects, making it a useful addition to an edible and pollinator-friendly garden.
