Description
Blackberry ‘Loch Ness’ is a productive, thornless blackberry variety known for its large, firm, glossy black fruits and excellent flavour. Its vigorous but manageable growth makes it a good choice for home gardens and large containers, although in Malta it benefits from reliable summer watering and protection from extreme afternoon heat.
💧 Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist during active growth, flowering, and fruit development. Regular deep watering is particularly important during Malta’s hot, dry spring and summer months, as prolonged drought can affect fruit size and quality. Adding organic mulch around the root zone helps conserve moisture and keep the roots cooler. Avoid waterlogged conditions.
☀️ Light
Grow in full sun to partial shade. Plenty of sunlight encourages flowering and sweet, well-ripened berries. In Malta, morning sun followed by some protection from the strongest afternoon summer heat can be beneficial, particularly in very exposed locations and for plants grown in containers.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
‘Loch Ness’ is a vigorous, semi-upright blackberry with long, thornless canes, making pruning and harvesting considerably easier. White to pale-pink flowers are followed by large berries that ripen from red to glossy black.
Fruit is mainly produced on second-year canes. After harvesting, cut the canes that have fruited back to ground level and retain healthy new canes for the following year’s crop. Provide a sturdy trellis or wire support to keep the long canes organised and improve airflow around the plant.
🪴 Potting Mix
Plant in fertile, organic-rich, well-draining soil that retains consistent moisture without becoming waterlogged. Adding compost or well-rotted organic matter will improve both fertility and moisture retention. For container growing, choose a large pot with generous drainage and use a high-quality potting mix suitable for fruiting plants.
🌿 Fertilizer
Apply a balanced fertilizer or well-rotted compost in late winter or early spring as new growth begins. A fertilizer formulated for fruiting plants can be applied during flowering and early fruit development. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage vigorous cane and foliage growth at the expense of fruit production.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Blackberries are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, and the ripe berries are not considered poisonous. Eating large quantities may still cause digestive upset. As ‘Loch Ness’ is thornless, it is also a particularly convenient blackberry variety for gardens shared with pets.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Blackberry ‘Loch Ness’ is primarily valued as an edible fruiting plant rather than for specific air-purifying properties. Its flowers provide pollen and nectar for bees and other beneficial insects, making it a useful addition to edible and pollinator-friendly gardens.
