Description

Agave potatorum ‘Shoji-Raijin Mediopicta Alba’ is a beautiful miniature succulent, prized for its compact rosette shape and striking white-centred variegation. Its thick, fleshy leaves feature creamy-white central stripes bordered by blue-green margins, creating an elegant contrast. The leaves are arranged in a neat, symmetrical rosette, with small marginal teeth and distinctive pointed tips.

This slow-growing Japanese cultivar is highly sought after by succulent collectors for its unusual colouring and architectural appearance. Its compact size makes it ideal for sunny windowsills, decorative containers and miniature succulent collections, while its drought tolerance makes it relatively easy to maintain.

Plant Details

Botanical Name: Agave potatorum ‘Shoji-Raijin Mediopicta Alba’
Common Name: Variegated Dwarf Butterfly Agave • White-Centred Shoji Raijin
Plant Type: Variegated Succulent
Pot Size: 6.5 cm
Growth Rate: Slow
Growth Habit: Compact, symmetrical rosette, occasionally producing offsets
Mature Size: Approximately 10–15 cm tall × 15–20 cm wide

Care Guide

☀️ Light:

Prefers very bright light with several hours of gentle direct sunlight. In Malta, protect from intense summer afternoon sun, particularly as the creamy-white variegated areas are more sensitive to scorching.

💧 Watering:

Water thoroughly during the growing season, allowing the compost to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering significantly during winter and avoid water collecting in the centre of the rosette.

🌱 Soil:

Use a very free-draining cactus and succulent compost with added mineral grit, pumice or perlite to ensure excellent drainage.

🌡 Temperature:

Best grown between 15–30°C. Protect from frost and prolonged temperatures below 5°C, especially when the compost is damp.

🌸 Flowering

Mature plants may eventually produce a tall flowering stalk bearing clusters of yellow-green flowers. Like most Agaves, the main rosette flowers only once at the end of its life cycle. However, flowering is uncommon in young container-grown specimens, and any offsets can continue growing after the parent rosette flowers.

Pet Safety: 🐾 Keep Out of Reach of Pets

Agaves contain irritating sap and compounds that may cause digestive upset if ingested by cats or dogs. Their sharp leaf tips and marginal teeth can also cause physical injury. Keep away from curious pets and young children, and wear gloves when handling.

Good to Know

The name ‘Mediopicta Alba’ refers to the distinctive white colouring running through the centre of the leaves. This attractive variegation is caused by areas containing reduced amounts of chlorophyll, giving each rosette its characteristic cream-and-green appearance.

‘Shoji-Raijin’ is a miniature Japanese selection valued for its compact growth and beautifully arranged leaves. Unlike larger Agave species, this cultivar remains relatively small, making it particularly suitable for container growing and collector’s displays.

As the plant matures, it may produce small offsets around its base, allowing it to gradually form an attractive cluster.
