🪴 Planting Instructions

• When to plant: Autumn, once the soil has cooled; allow time for chilling if needed
• Planting depth: Approximately 10cm deep, following the packet instructions
• Spacing: Approximately 10–15cm apart
• Soil: Moderately fertile, well-drained soil. For pots, use a free-draining potting mix and a container with drainage holes.
• Planting method: Place bulbs with their pointed ends facing upwards, cover with soil and water if dry. Wear gloves, as the bulbs can irritate skin.

💧 Watering

Keep the soil lightly moist during active growth and flowering, without allowing it to become waterlogged. Empty standing water from pot saucers. Reduce watering as the foliage yellows, keeping dormant bulbs relatively dry during summer.

Choose a sunny or lightly shaded position sheltered from strong winds. In Malta, morning sunshine with some afternoon shade can help protect flowers from strong spring heat.

🌿 Feeding

Apply a potassium-rich liquid fertilizer during active growth, following the product instructions. Continue after flowering while the leaves remain green, then stop once they begin to yellow.

🍃 After Flowering

Cut off faded flower stalks, leaving the leaves intact until they have completely yellowed and dried.

Bulbs can remain in well-drained soil, although flower spikes may be smaller in later years. Fresh bulbs generally give the fullest display.

🇲🇹 Local Growing Tips

Hyacinths benefit from winter chilling. If these bulbs have not already been chilled, refrigerating them in a paper bag for around 6–8 weeks before planting can improve flowering in mild climates.

Keep them away from fruit, which releases gas that can damage developing flowers. Never freeze them, and plant promptly after chilling once outdoor conditions are cooler. Follow any supplier treatment instructions.
