  • Flowering season: Early to mid-spring; local timing may vary
  • Height: Typically 20–30cm, depending on variety
  • Position: Full sun or light partial shade
  • Ideal for: Pots, border edges, rock gardens and garden beds

🪴 Planting Instructions

  • When to plant: Late autumn, once the soil has cooled; allow time for chilling if needed
  • Planting depth: Plant at approximately three times the bulb’s height, measured from the soil surface to its base.
  • Spacing: Approximately 10cm apart
  • Soil: Fertile, free-draining soil. For pots, use a free-draining potting mix and a container with drainage holes.
  • Planting method: Place bulbs with their pointed ends facing upwards, cover with soil and water if dry. Plant in groups for a fuller display.

💧 Watering

Keep the soil lightly moist during active growth, without allowing it to become waterlogged. Check pots regularly, especially during dry spring weather. Reduce watering as the leaves yellow and keep dormant bulbs relatively dry during summer.

☀️ Light & Position

Choose a sunny position or one with light partial shade. In Malta, morning sunshine with some afternoon shade can help protect blooms from strong spring heat. Avoid deep shade and areas where rainwater collects.

🌿 Feeding

Apply a potassium-rich liquid fertilizer during active growth, following the product instructions. Continue while the leaves remain green after flowering, then stop as they begin to yellow.

🍃 After Flowering

Remove faded flower heads and allow the leaves to yellow naturally before cutting them back.

Bulbs can remain planted where drainage is excellent and summers are dry. Although Greigii tulips can return in suitable conditions, repeat flowering in Malta is not guaranteed.

🇲🇹 Local Growing Tips

Tulips need a cold period for good flower development. If the bulbs have not already been chilled, refrigerating them in a paper bag for around 6–8 weeks before planting can help in mild climates. Follow any supplier instructions, as some bulbs may need longer chilling.

Keep bulbs away from fruit, which releases gas that can damage developing flowers. Never freeze them, and plant promptly after chilling once outdoor conditions are cooler.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety

Toxic to cats and dogs if eaten, especially the bulbs. Keep bulbs and plants away from pets that chew plants or dig in the soil.
