Description
Egyptian Red Beetroot (Beta vulgaris), known in Italian as Bietola Rossa d’Egitto, is a traditional, fast-growing root vegetable prized for its deep red colouring and tender, sweet flesh. This early-maturing variety produces rounded to slightly flattened roots with a rich red interior, making it an excellent choice for home vegetable gardens.
Perfect for fresh salads, roasting, boiling, pickling, soups and Mediterranean dishes, Egyptian Red Beetroot is delicious both raw and cooked. Its young leaves are also edible and can be prepared similarly to spinach or Swiss chard.
🌱 Growing Instructions
☀️ Sunlight: Prefers full sun, with at least 5–6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Tolerates partial shade during warmer weather.
💧 Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Irregular watering can cause roots to become woody or develop cracks.
🌱 Soil: Plant in loose, fertile, well-draining soil free from stones. Avoid fresh manure and excessive nitrogen, which can affect root development.
🌡️ Temperature: Grows best between 10°C–22°C. Malta’s mild autumn and winter temperatures provide favourable growing conditions.
📏 Spacing: Allow approximately 10–15 cm between plants and 25–30 cm between rows for healthy root development.
🌾 Fertilizer: Apply a balanced vegetable fertilizer lightly during active growth, following product instructions. Avoid excessive nitrogen-rich feeding.
✂️ Harvesting: Harvest when roots are approximately 5–8 cm in diameter for the best flavour and tenderness. This early variety typically matures around 50–70 days after sowing, depending on growing conditions.
🌿 Local Growing Tips (Malta)
Best planting season: September to March, when cooler temperatures encourage healthy root development.
Position: Sunny vegetable gardens, raised beds or deep containers with loose, well-draining soil.
Companion plants: Lettuce, onions, radishes and kohlrabi.
Common issue: Poor root development can result from compacted soil, overcrowding or excessive nitrogen. Ensure loose soil and adequate spacing, and avoid disturbing the roots when transplanting.
