Description

Salvia nemorosa ‘Caradonna’ is a beautiful flowering perennial known for its upright dark-purple stems topped with masses of violet-blue flowers. Its long flowering season and compact habit make it an excellent choice for sunny borders, mixed planting, and containers, while its flowers are particularly attractive to bees and other pollinators.

💧 Watering

Water regularly while the plant is establishing, then allow the upper soil to dry slightly between waterings. Once established, ‘Caradonna’ has good drought tolerance, but in Malta it benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged summer heat. Container-grown plants require more frequent watering. Avoid constantly wet soil.

Grow in full sun for the strongest growth and most abundant flowering, ideally with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. In Malta, good airflow and some protection from the most intense afternoon heat can be beneficial during peak summer, particularly for container-grown plants.

‘Caradonna’ forms compact clumps of aromatic grey-green foliage, with distinctive dark stems carrying upright spikes of violet-blue flowers from spring into summer. Cut back spent flower spikes to encourage further blooms and keep the plant tidy. A stronger trim after the main flowering flush can stimulate fresh foliage and possible repeat flowering.

🪴 Potting Mix

Plant in fertile but very well-draining soil. For containers, use a quality potting mix amended with perlite, pumice, or coarse grit. Excellent drainage is particularly important during periods of heat and humidity, as Salvia nemorosa dislikes sitting in persistently wet soil.

Salvia nemorosa has relatively modest feeding requirements. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or some compost in spring as new growth begins.
