Description
Salvia × jamensis ‘La Siesta’ is a compact, bushy perennial valued for its aromatic foliage and colourful flowers produced over a long season. Its love of sunshine, warmth, and free-draining soil makes it particularly suitable for Malta, where it works beautifully in sunny borders, Mediterranean gardens, and containers.
💧 Watering
Water regularly while the plant is establishing, allowing the upper soil to dry slightly between waterings. Once established, Salvia × jamensis is drought-tolerant, although occasional deep watering during Malta’s prolonged hot, dry summers will encourage healthier growth and continued flowering. Container-grown plants require more frequent watering.

Grow in full sun for compact growth and abundant flowering, ideally with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. It tolerates Malta’s strong sunshine and heat well once established. Good airflow around the plant is also beneficial during hot, humid weather.

Regularly removing spent flower stems and lightly trimming the plant encourages fresh growth and repeated flowering. A stronger prune towards the end of winter helps maintain a dense, bushy shape.

Plant in light, fertile, very well-draining soil. For containers, use a quality potting mix amended with perlite, pumice, or coarse grit. Good drainage is particularly important, as Salvia × jamensis dislikes prolonged wet conditions around its roots.
