Description

Lavandula pinnata, commonly known as Fernleaf Lavender, is a distinctive evergreen shrub with aromatic, finely divided silver-grey foliage and tall purple flower spikes. Its preference for warm, sunny conditions makes it very suitable for Malta, where it can provide attractive foliage and flowers for an extended period.

💧 Watering

Water regularly while the plant is establishing, then allow the soil to dry well between waterings. Once established, Fernleaf Lavender is drought-tolerant and prefers relatively dry conditions. Container-grown plants may require more frequent watering during Malta’s hottest summer weather, but avoid constantly damp soil and waterlogging.

☀️ Light

Grow in full sun, ideally with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day. It thrives in warm, bright conditions and tolerates Malta’s strong sunshine well. Good air circulation is also important, particularly during periods of hot and humid weather.

🍃 Foliage / Growth

Fernleaf Lavender is easily recognised by its deeply divided, fern-like silver-grey leaves, which give it a softer and more delicate appearance than traditional lavender varieties. Tall stems carry attractive violet-purple flower spikes above the foliage. In Malta’s mild climate, flowering can continue for a long period when conditions are favourable. Remove spent flowers and lightly prune to encourage a compact, bushy shape, avoiding hard pruning into old bare wood.

🪴 Potting Mix

Plant in light, very well-draining soil. For containers, use a Mediterranean herb or free-draining potting mix amended with coarse grit, pumice, or perlite. Excellent drainage is particularly important, as Lavender is much more tolerant of dry soil than prolonged wet conditions.

🌿 Fertilizer

Lavandula pinnata requires relatively little fertilizer. Apply a light dose of balanced fertilizer or compost during spring to support new growth and flowering. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage soft foliage and reduce flower production.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety

Lavender contains aromatic compounds that can cause gastrointestinal upset if consumed in sufficient quantities and is best kept away from cats and dogs that regularly chew plants. Concentrated lavender essential oils pose a considerably greater risk to pets than the living plant.

🌬️ Air Purifying

Lavandula pinnata is primarily valued for its aromatic foliage, unusual texture, and colourful flowers rather than for proven air-purifying properties. Its flowers are also attractive to bees and other beneficial pollinating insects.
