Description

Lavandula angustifolia, commonly known as English Lavender, is a fragrant evergreen to semi-evergreen Mediterranean shrub prized for its aromatic silver-green foliage and purple flower spikes. It is ideal for sunny borders, herb gardens, rock gardens, and containers, although Malta’s hot summers make excellent drainage and good air circulation particularly important.

💧 Watering

Water regularly while the plant is establishing, then allow the soil to dry well between waterings. Once established, Lavender is drought-tolerant and prefers being kept on the dry side. During Malta’s summer, give container-grown plants a thorough watering when needed rather than frequent small amounts, and never leave the roots sitting in wet soil.

☀️ Light
Plant in full sun, ideally receiving at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day. Lavender needs plenty of sunshine for compact growth, abundant flowering, and strongly aromatic foliage. Good airflow is also beneficial during Malta’s hot and sometimes humid conditions.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
This compact, bushy shrub produces narrow, aromatic grey-green leaves and upright spikes of fragrant purple flowers. Flowering is generally strongest from spring into summer. Trim back spent flower stems and lightly shape the plant after flowering to maintain dense growth, but avoid cutting deeply into old, leafless woody stems.

🪴 Potting Mix
Excellent drainage is essential. Use a light, free-draining mix suitable for Mediterranean herbs, amended with coarse grit, pumice, or perlite if necessary. Lavender generally prefers neutral to alkaline conditions and should not be planted in heavy soil that remains wet.

🌿 Fertilizer
Lavender requires very little fertilizer. A light application of balanced fertilizer or compost in spring is usually sufficient. Avoid excessive feeding, particularly high-nitrogen fertilizers, as these encourage soft leafy growth and can reduce flowering and fragrance.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Lavender contains compounds such as linalool and linalyl acetate and is considered toxic to cats and dogs if sufficient quantities are ingested. Small accidental contact is unlikely to cause serious problems, but pets should be discouraged from chewing the plant. Concentrated lavender essential oils present a much greater risk and should be kept away from pets.

🌬️ Air Purifying
Lavender is primarily valued for its fragrance, flowers, and ornamental qualities rather than for proven air-purifying properties. Outdoors, its nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to bees and other beneficial pollinators, making it a useful addition to a wildlife-friendly garden.
