Description

💧 Watering
Water when the top 3–5cm of soil feels dry, allowing excess water to drain away completely. During Malta’s hot summer months, check the soil more frequently, while watering should be reduced during winter. Avoid keeping the soil constantly wet, as this can lead to root rot.

☀️ Light
Ficus benghalensis thrives in very bright, indirect light and can tolerate some gentle morning or late afternoon sun. Protect indoor plants from Malta’s intense midday summer sunlight, particularly if they are positioned directly behind glass or recently moved outdoors.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
This moderate to fast-growing Ficus develops large, oval leaves with a slightly velvety texture and prominent veins. Indoors, it can gradually become a substantial statement plant, although regular pruning can control its size and encourage branching. Wipe the broad leaves occasionally to remove dust and keep the foliage looking healthy.

🪴 Potting Mix
Use a fertile, well-draining indoor potting mix with added perlite, pumice, or bark to improve drainage and airflow around the roots. Choose a sturdy container with drainage holes and repot when the plant becomes noticeably root-bound.

🌿 Fertilizer
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer. Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.

❌🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Ficus benghalensis is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Its milky sap can also irritate the skin and mouth, so keep the plant out of reach of pets and wear gloves when pruning if you have sensitive skin.

🌬️ Air Purifying
Ficus benghalensis contributes to a pleasant indoor environment through its large, abundant foliage and natural transpiration. Although plants can absorb some airborne compounds under controlled conditions, it is best valued for its impressive greenery rather than as a substitute for proper ventilation or indoor air filtration.
