Description
Calatheas are beautiful tropical houseplants prized for their striking foliage, with patterns and colours ranging from deep green and silver to purple, pink, and cream. Each variety has its own distinctive appearance, making mixed Calatheas an excellent choice for adding colour and texture to indoor spaces.
💧 Watering
Keep the potting mix consistently lightly moist, allowing the top 1–2cm to dry before watering again. During Malta’s hot summers, check the soil regularly, but never allow the roots to sit in water. Filtered or rainwater is preferable when available, as Calatheas can be sensitive to minerals in tap water.
☀️ Light
Calatheas grow best in bright, indirect light and many varieties also tolerate medium light conditions. Avoid direct sunlight, particularly Malta’s intense summer sun, as this can scorch the leaves and fade their distinctive colours and patterns.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
Calatheas are compact, clump-forming plants grown primarily for their spectacular foliage. Leaf shape, colour, and pattern vary considerably between varieties, and many naturally raise or reposition their leaves between day and night. Good humidity helps prevent brown or crispy leaf edges.
🪴 Potting Mix
Use a light, moisture-retentive but well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter. A combination of quality indoor plant compost, perlite, and orchid bark provides a good balance of moisture retention and airflow around the roots.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety**
Calatheas are considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making them an excellent choice for pet-friendly homes.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Calatheas contribute to a pleasant indoor environment through their abundant foliage and natural transpiration. They are best appreciated for their decorative leaves and greenery rather than relied upon as a substitute for proper ventilation or indoor air filtration.
