Description
💧 Watering
Allow the top 3–5cm of the potting mix to dry before watering thoroughly. During Malta’s warmer months, check the soil more frequently, while watering can be reduced in winter. Avoid overwatering or leaving the roots sitting in water, as Dracaenas are susceptible to root rot.
☀️ Light
Grows best in bright, indirect light, which helps maintain its attractive golden variegation. It can tolerate lower light levels, although growth may become slower and the colouring less pronounced. Protect it from Malta’s strong direct summer sun, which can scorch the foliage.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
This upright, slow to moderate-growing plant develops leafy stems with attractive green and golden foliage. It can gradually form a tall, architectural indoor specimen. Remove older yellowing leaves when necessary and wipe the foliage occasionally to keep it clean and healthy.
🪴 Potting Mix
Use a fertile, well-draining indoor potting mix with added perlite or bark to improve drainage and airflow. Always choose a container with drainage holes to prevent excess moisture around the roots.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer at half strength. Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter when growth slows.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Dracaena is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. It contains compounds called saponins, which may cause vomiting, loss of appetite, drooling, or other digestive symptoms. Keep the plant out of reach of pets.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Dracaenas are commonly associated with indoor air-purifying qualities and can absorb some airborne compounds under controlled conditions. In the home, however, Dracaena ‘Gold’ is best valued for its attractive foliage and contribution to a greener indoor environment rather than as a substitute for ventilation or air filtration.
