Description
💧 Watering:
Low. Water moderately only during its first year. Once mature, it is exceptionally drought-tolerant and handles dry summers with ease. It hates wet feet; soggy winter soil will quickly rot the roots.
☀️ Light:
Full sun. It demands absolute, direct sunlight for at least 6 to 8 hours daily. Intense sun keeps its growth tight and fuels its giant blooms. It easily handles blistering Mediterranean heat waves.
🍃 Foliage & Growth:
Rapid and sprawling. It quickly forms a large shrub up to 2 meters tall and wide. The narrow leaves are covered in stiff, velvety hairs. Prune the flower stalks hard to the base right after they fade to keep the bush dense and compact.
🪴 Potting Mix:
Sharp drainage is mandatory. It thrives in poor, rocky, sandy, or gravelly soils and completely dislikes rich earth. It is perfectly adapted to highly alkaline limestone environments.
🌿 Fertilizer:
Minimal. It prefers nutrient-poor soil. A light scattering of compost or a low-nitrogen fertilizer in early spring is plenty. High nitrogen causes weak, floppy leaves and fewer flowers.
⚠️ Pet Safety:
Highly toxic. All parts contain alkaloids that cause gastrointestinal distress and irreversible liver damage in dogs and cats. The stiff leaf hairs can also cause painful skin irritation upon contact. Wear gloves when handling.
🌬️ Air Purifying & Use:
A champion outdoor coastal windbreak. Its tough architecture easily resists heavy salt spray and powerful coastal gales. The nectar-rich towers act as an incredible biodiversity magnet for local bees and butterflies.
