Description
The Vinca, commonly known as Periwinkle, is a incredibly resilient, trailing evergreen perennial. It is highly valued for its glossy, dark green foliage and its pinwheel-shaped flowers in soft shades of violet-blue, purple, or white that bloom heavily from spring through autumn.
💧 Watering
Water moderately. While establishing, it prefers regular watering whenever the top few centimeters of soil dry out. Once its roots are deep, it becomes highly drought-tolerant and can easily survive dry spells. Be careful not to leave it in soggy, waterlogged soil, which can invite stem rot.
☀️ Light
Extremely versatile. It thrives beautifully in everything from full sun to deep shade. In the hot Maltese climate, providing partial shade or dappled afternoon sun helps keep the glossy leaves from scorching and ensures a vibrant green carpet all year.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
It features a low-growing, mat-forming, vine-like habit. Long, slender stems trail along the ground, easily rooting at the nodes to form an expansive, weed-blocking groundcover. It can be easily trimmed or cut back hard in late winter to refresh its growth and keep it neat.
🪴 Potting Mix
Thrives in almost any well-draining soil mix. A standard potting soil lightened up with a bit of perlite or sand works beautifully. It adapts effortlessly to Malta’s neutral-to-alkaline limestone soils without any issues.
🌿 Fertilizer
Requires very little feeding. A single application of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring is plenty to support healthy growth and continuous flowering. Over-fertilizing can lead to excessive leaf growth at the expense of blooms.
⚠️🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Toxic to pets. Vinca contains cytotoxic alkaloids (including vincristine and vinblastine) that are harmful to animals. If ingested by dogs or cats, it can cause vomiting, diarrhea, low blood pressure, and coordination issues. Keep it contained in hanging baskets or areas where pets don’t forage.

An absolute champion for weed suppression and soil stabilization. Because it forms such a dense, interlocking carpet, it is ideal for planting on dry banks, under large garden trees, or trailing down rustic stone retaining walls to keep dust and soil in place.
