Description

💧 Watering
This plant is a heavy drinker that loves moisture. Water frequently and deeply to keep the soil consistently damp, especially during the peak of the hot Maltese summer. It can even handle boggy conditions or being placed at the shallow edge of a pond.

☀️ Light
It demands full, intense, and direct sunlight to produce its brilliant flowers. It loves the baking heat and will thrive in the most exposed positions. If kept in partial shade, it will grow fine leaves but will produce far fewer blooms.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
It features massive, broad leaves that look like banana plant foliage, rising from thick underground stems (rhizomes). It grows quickly into tall, architectural clumps that can reach over 1.5 meters high. Cut the flower stalks down to the ground once they finish blooming to encourage fresh new shoots.

🪴 Potting Mix
Thrives best in rich, fertile, and organic soils that hold onto moisture well. A high-quality potting mix enriched with plenty of compost or well-rotted manure is ideal. It adapts easily to Malta’s neutral-to-alkaline conditions, provided it is fed well.

🌿 Fertilizer
Cannas are incredibly heavy feeders. Apply a high-potassium, slow-release fertilizer in early spring, and supplement with a liquid fertilizer every two weeks during the summer to fuel its rapid growth and continuous blooming cycle.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety**
It is completely non-toxic to dogs and cats. This makes it an excellent choice for adding safe, dramatic, high-impact height to pet-friendly gardens and large patio planters.

🌬️ Air Purifying
Due to its massive, broad leaves, it is highly efficient at increasing localized humidity outdoors. It also acts as an excellent, dense visual screen and wind-filtering buffer for large, open terraces or pool areas.
