Description

The Carpobrotus edulis, widely known as the Hottentot Fig (or Sabażra in Maltese), is a trailing, succulent perennial. It features thick, fleshy triangular leaves and large, daisy-like flowers in bright yellow or pink, making it a common sight across coastal Malta.

💧 Watering
Water very sparingly. This succulent stores water in its fleshy leaves and easily survives prolonged droughts. Only water potted plants when the soil is bone-dry all the way to the bottom, and avoid watering completely during rainy winter weeks.

☀️ Light
It demands full, intense, and direct sunlight to thrive and open its large flowers. It absolutely loves the baking Maltese heat and is completely unfazed by strong, salty coastal winds.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
It grows extremely fast, forming a dense, heavy mat of trailing stems that crawl along the ground or cascade down walls. It can become highly invasive in wild nature, so it is best kept contained within pots, planters, or clear garden borders.

🪴 Potting Mix
It requires poor, sandy, or gritty soil with exceptionally sharp drainage. A standard cactus and succulent mix with extra perlite or sand works perfectly. It thrives effortlessly in Malta’s naturally poor, alkaline limestone soil.

🌿 Fertilizer
No fertilizer is needed. Feeding this plant will only cause weak, watery growth and reduce flowering. It is perfectly adapted to surviving in the most nutrient-poor environments.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety**
It is generally considered non-toxic to dogs and cats. The thick leaves are safe around curious pets, though the heavy trailing stems should be placed where pets won’t trip over them.

🌬️ Air Purifying
Its tight, dense matting habit makes it an absolute champion for soil erosion control on steep, dry slopes or rocky banks. It traps dust efficiently and keeps soil from blowing away on windy terraces.
