Description
💧 Watering
Water regularly until the young plant is fully established. Once its roots are deep, it becomes exceptionally drought-tolerant and survives on rainfall alone. For potted specimens, always let the soil dry out completely between waterings.
☀️ Light
It thrives in full, intense sunlight but can also tolerate partial shade. It easily shrugs off the blistering Maltese summer heat and handles salty coastal winds without taking any damage.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
It forms a dense, leathery, and slow-growing bush with an attractive rounded shape. The leaves emit a pleasant, resinous aroma when crushed. It handles heavy pruning beautifully and can be used as a tough privacy hedge.
🪴 Potting Mix
It is highly adaptable and grows well in poor, rocky, or sandy ground. It loves Malta’s naturally alkaline, limestone-rich soil. The only strict requirement is excellent drainage, as it cannot stand waterlogged roots.
🌿 Fertilizer
Virtually no feeding is necessary. It is adapted to nutrient-deficient landscapes. A light application of organic compost around the base of the plant in early spring is more than enough to support steady growth.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety**
It is generally considered non-toxic to dogs and cats. It serves as a very safe, robust choice for garden borders or exposed terraces where pets roam freely.
🌬️ Air Purifying
As a tough native plant, it excels at trapping dust, filtering urban air pollution, and acting as a windbreak. Its dense structure provides excellent shelter and food for local wild birds and beneficial insects.
