Description

💧 Watering
Water regularly during its first year to help the roots settle. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and handles dry spells perfectly. Overwatering is its biggest enemy—always allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, and keep it on the drier side during the winter.

☀️ Light
It requires full, direct sunlight to maintain its dense shape and maximize flower production. It thrives in the hot Maltese sun and is highly resilient against strong, salty coastal winds, making it an excellent choices for exposed coastal terraces.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
It has a distinctively low, spreading, and mounding growth habit. The small leaves are intensely glossy and remain a rich, deep green all year round. Prune lightly right after the spring flowering period to tidy up the shape, but avoid cutting back into old, bare wood.

🪴 Potting Mix
Excellent drainage is absolutely mandatory. Use a gritty, light potting soil mixed with plenty of coarse sand or perlite. It adapts well to poor, rocky soils and is highly compatible with Malta’s naturally alkaline limestone earth.

🌿 Fertilizer
Do not use heavy or high-nitrogen fertilizers, as these will lead to weak, floppy growth and a shorter lifespan. A very light top-dressing of organic compost around the base of the plant in early spring is all it needs.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety**
It is generally considered non-toxic to dogs and cats, making it a completely safe and worry-free addition to pet-friendly outdoor spaces.

🌬️ Air Purifying
Its sprawling, mat-forming root system makes it fantastic for soil stabilization on banks or terraced slopes. The fragrant, bright blue spring blossoms are also an absolute magnet for local bees and butterflies.
