The Ficus carica, or the Common Fig, is a symbol of the Mediterranean and a staple of the Maltese landscape (it-tina). In Malta, it is prized not just for its delicious, honey-sweet fruit, but also for its beautiful, deeply lobed leaves and the cool, dense shade it provides during the scorching summer months.

💧 Watering
While famous for being drought-tolerant once established in the ground, container-grown figs need regular watering. During the Maltese summer, the large leaves transpire quickly; if the soil dries out completely, the plant may drop its fruit. Water deeply when the top 3-5cm of soil feels dry.

☀️ Light
Figs are sun-worshipers and require full sun (at least 6-8 hours daily) to ripen their fruit and develop high sugar content. They handle the intense Maltese sun with ease, though the pots themselves should be light-colored or shaded to prevent the roots from “cooking” in July.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
Features large, iconic, hand-shaped leaves that are slightly rough to the touch. It is a deciduous tree, meaning it will drop its leaves in winter, revealing a beautiful, silver-grey skeletal frame. In Malta, you can often expect two crops: the farkizzan (early crop) and the main summer crop.

🪴 Potting Mix
Use a heavy-duty, well-draining potting mix. Figs actually fruit better when their roots are slightly restricted, which makes them excellent candidates for large pots or troughs. They are very tolerant of Malta’s alkaline, limestone-rich soil.

🌿 Fertilizer
Apply a high-potash fertilizer (like a tomato feed) every two weeks once the tiny fruitlets appear. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers in the summer, as this will encourage the tree to grow massive leaves and long branches instead of ripening its fruit.

⚠🐕🐈 Pet Safety
The Fig tree is mildly toxic to pets. The milky white sap (latex) found in the stems and leaves can cause skin irritation or gastrointestinal upset if chewed. It’s best to keep the tree in a spot where pets won’t treat the low branches as a snack.

🌬️ Air Purifying
As a large-leafed outdoor tree, it is a powerhouse at producing oxygen and providing a natural cooling effect through transpiration. It is also excellent at absorbing carbon and acting as a windbreak on exposed terraces.
