Description

💧 Watering
While it is relatively drought-tolerant once established, it prefers regular watering in well-drained soil. In the peak of the Maltese summer, ensure container-grown plants don’t dry out completely, but always allow the top 2-3cm of soil to dry before watering again to avoid root rot.

☀️ Light
It thrives in full sun to partial shade. To get the most prolific flowering and a nice compact shape, give it as much direct sunlight as possible. It is highly resilient against the intense Maltese sun and performs well even in exposed, windy locations.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
Features soft, oval, myrtle-like leaves that stay a fresh green year-round. It has a naturally rounded, bushy habit and can be easily pruned into a small decorative tree or a neat flowering hedge. The vibrant purple “wings” of the flowers make it a standout against local limestone.

🪴 Potting Mix
Requires a well-draining potting medium. It is quite adaptable to different soil types and handles the alkaline (limestone-based) soils of Malta better than many other flowering shrubs. A standard Mediterranean mix with a bit of added grit is ideal.

🌿 Fertilizer
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring and again in late summer. Avoid over-fertilizing with high-nitrogen products, as this can lead to excessive leaf growth at the expense of its beautiful purple blooms.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Polygala is generally considered mildly toxic if ingested in large quantities, though it is not usually a high-risk plant for pets. To be safe, it’s best placed where curious dogs or cats won’t make a snack of the foliage or flowers.

🌬️ Air Purifying
As a robust outdoor shrub, it’s excellent at providing oxygen and acting as a natural windbreak for more delicate plants. Its dense structure is also effective at trapping dust and sea salt, keeping the air on your terrace feeling crisp and clean.
