💧 Watering
Most Bromeliads have a central “tank” or “cup” formed by their leaves; keep this filled with fresh water, ideally rainwater or bottled water to avoid lime buildup. Ensure the potting medium itself stays only slightly damp, as the roots are mainly for anchoring and are prone to rot if kept too wet.

☀️ Light
They prefer bright, indirect light; a spot near a window with a sheer curtain is ideal in Malta. Avoid direct midday sun, which can quickly bleach or burn the tropical foliage, but ensure they have enough light to keep their colors vivid.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
These plants feature stiff, leathery leaves that can be solid green, striped, or spotted, radiating from a central point. The “flower” is actually a long-lasting colorful bract that can remain stunning for several months before the mother plant eventually produces “pups” (offsets).

🪴 Potting Mix
They require an extremely well-draining, airy medium like an orchid bark mix or a blend of peat and perlite. Because they are often epiphytic in nature, they do not grow well in heavy, traditional Maltese garden soil.

🌿 Fertilizer
Use a very weak, half-strength liquid fertilizer once a month during spring and summer, spraying it directly onto the leaves and into the central cup. Over-fertilizing can cause the plant to lose its compact shape and vibrant color.

✔🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Bromeliads are generally non-toxic to dogs and cats, making them a fantastic “worry-free” tropical choice for pet owners.

🌬️ Air Purifying
Bromeliads are unique because they release oxygen and remove air pollutants specifically at night. This makes them excellent “bedroom plants,” helping to improve indoor air quality while you sleep.
