💧 Watering
Gazanias are the kings of drought tolerance.
The Routine: In the ground, they can survive on very little. In pots, water them only when the soil is completely dry.
The Danger: Their biggest enemy in the Maltese winter is excessive wetness. If the soil stays soggy during a rainy February, the crown of the plant will rot. Always use pots with large drainage holes.
☀️ Light
Maximum Sun. * Just like the Delosperma, Gazanias are famous for “sleeping.” The flowers will close up tightly at night and even on very cloudy days.
To see the ‘Jupiter’ blooms in their full, plate-sized glory, they need to be in the direct, uncompromising Maltese sun.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
The ‘Jupiter’ variety typically features beautiful silvery-green leaves with a felt-like underside. This silver coating reflects sunlight and traps moisture, which is why they handle the Maltese heat so well. They grow in tidy clumps rather than trailing vines, making them perfect for “border” planting.
🪴 Potting Mix
They prefer sandy, well-draining soil.
They actually do better in “poor” soil than in rich, heavy compost.
A mix of local Maltese soil, a bit of compost, and a generous helping of sand or grit is ideal. They love the alkaline nature of our limestone-heavy environment.
🌿 Fertilizer
Go easy on the food. A balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during spring is plenty. If you feed them too much, you’ll get a lot of silver leaves but very few of those massive “Jupiter” flowers.
✔🐕🐈 Pet Safety
