Description

💧 Watering
Once established, it is exceptionally drought-tolerant. In a Maltese summer, it appreciates a deep soak once or twice a week. If grown in a hanging basket, it may need more frequent watering as the wind and sun dry out the root ball quickly. It is quite “vocal”—the leaves will droop slightly to tell you it’s thirsty.

☀️ Light
Thrives in full, direct sun. It needs the heat of the Maltese sun to produce its signature carpet of flowers. If placed in the shade, it will stop blooming, the stems will become leggy, and it may become prone to powdery mildew during the humid months.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
Features small, dark green, serrated leaves that have a slightly rough, sandpaper-like texture. It has a prostrate (low-growing) habit, reaching only about 30 cm in height but spreading up to 2 meters wide. It produces clusters of tiny, vibrant purple or white flowers almost year-round in Malta.

🪴 Potting Mix
Not fussy at all! It thrives in a standard, well-draining potting mix. In Malta, it handles our alkaline/limestone soil with ease. The most important factor is drainage; it cannot tolerate standing water, especially during the heavy winter rains.

🌿 Fertilizer
Light feeder. A balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during spring and summer is plenty. Avoid over-fertilizing with high-nitrogen products, as you will get lots of green leaves but very few of those purple flowers.

❌🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Toxic. All parts of the Lantana (especially the unripe green berries) contain liver toxins and skin irritants for cats and dogs. In Malta, it’s often used in public landscaping where pets roam, but for your own terrace, place it in high pots or hanging baskets if your pets like to chew on plants.

🌬️ Air Purifying
Mainly an outdoor plant. Its biggest contribution is as a pollinator magnet. In Malta, it is a favorite for the Swallowtail butterfly and various bees, making your balcony a vital “fueling station” for local wildlife.
