Tillandsia – The Plant That Doesn’t Need Soil to Survive

Why Tillandsias (Air Plants!) Are the Low-Maintenance Trend Your Home Needs

If you’ve been looking for a plant that is stunning, unique, and practically fool-proof, we’ve got great news: Tillandsias—aka air plants—are officially having a moment. And lucky for you… we happen to have a lot of them right now!

What Makes Tillandsias So Special?

Most plants rely on roots for nutrients, but air plants absorb moisture and vitamins through their leaves.
That means:

✔️ No soil required
✔️ No messy repotting
✔️ No pot sizes to worry about
✔️ You can display them (almost) anywhere

Put them in a seashell, hang them from string, perch one on a piece of driftwood… air plants are décor and nature in one package.

Worried About Plant Care? Don’t Be.

The basic care instructions for air plants sound almost like a joke:

• Give them bright, indirect light
Dunk or mist them once or twice a week
• Let them dry afterward

It’s also worth noting that those with silver foliage tend to be the most drought-tolerant, while greener types dry out faster.

Watering Tips:

Monitor the air plants to determine when they need a drink or establish a weekly watering schedule. To water them:

1. Place the air plants in a sink, bowl, or other container with enough water to submerge the plants.
2. Soak the plants for about a half hour.
3. Give them a gentle shake or two to remove excess water.
4. Turn them upside down on a towel to drain. Don’t skip this step; it prevents rot.
5. After the houseplants are dry, return them to their designated growing areas.

Tip: Air plants shouldn’t be allowed to sit in standing water other than during their regular soaking; it encourages rot.

Temperature and Humidity:

Air plants love warm weather. Protect your plants from anything colder than 8°C (Which is great news in Malta!).

Air plants thrive in high humidity. If your home is particularly dry in winter, add a humidifier to the room holding the plants.

Fertilizer:

These plants do not need a lot of fertilizer to survive, but an occasional soak in fertilized water can help your plant thrive. Use a liquid fertilizer and dilute it in water, use sparingly every other soak. It is important not to overdo it when applying fertilizer, as too much can burn the leaves and kill the plant.

🌸 Surprise! Air Plants Bloom.

One of air plants’ best-kept secrets?
They produce vibrant, colorful blooms and pups (baby plants!).

So the single plant you buy can turn into a whole family! Your plant budget will love that.
