Description
Green Romanesco Cauliflower (Brassica oleracea Botrytis Group), known in Italian as Cavolfiore Romanesco Verde, is a striking vegetable variety recognised for its vibrant lime-green heads and distinctive spiral-shaped florets. Its beautiful geometric appearance makes it a unique addition to home vegetable gardens.
With a mild, slightly sweet and nutty flavour, Romanesco Cauliflower is perfect for roasting, steaming, soups, pasta dishes and Mediterranean recipes. It retains a pleasant, firm texture when cooked and grows particularly well during Malta’s cooler months.
🌱 Growing Instructions
☀️ Sunlight: Prefers full sun, with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
💧 Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Regular watering is essential for healthy growth and proper head development.
🌱 Soil: Plant in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with compost or organic matter.
🌡️ Temperature: Grows best between 15°C–20°C. Cooler, stable temperatures encourage the development of firm, well-formed heads.
📏 Spacing: Allow approximately 50–60 cm between plants for healthy growth and good air circulation.
🌾 Fertilizer: Apply a balanced vegetable fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during active growth, following product instructions.
✂️ Harvesting: Harvest when the green head is firm, compact and fully developed, before the individual florets begin to separate. Typically ready approximately 90–120 days after transplanting, depending on the cultivar and growing conditions.
🌿 Local Growing Tips (Malta)
Best planting season: September to November, allowing the heads to develop during Malta’s cooler winter months.
Position: Sunny vegetable gardens or raised beds with fertile soil and good drainage.
Companion plants: Lettuce, onions, celery and aromatic herbs.
Common issue: Cabbage caterpillars and aphids may damage the leaves. Inspect plants regularly and use protective insect netting when necessary. Excessive heat can also affect head formation.
