Description

💧 Watering
Water when the top 2-3cm of soil feels dry. Ficus are sensitive to overwatering; ensure the pot drains freely to avoid leaf drop. In Malta’s humid winter, cut back on watering significantly, but during the dry summer, ensure the root ball doesn’t bake and stay bone-dry for too long.

☀️ Light
It requires bright, indirect light to maintain its high level of white variegation. Too little light will cause the plant to drop its leaves, while the direct midday Maltese sun can easily scorch the delicate white parts of the foliage. A spot near a large, bright window is ideal.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
The “Starlight” is famous for its dense, shimmering canopy of pointed oval leaves. It is a moderate grower that can be pruned into a formal hedge, a bushy shrub, or even a braided tree. Note: Ficus are “drama queens” and may drop their leaves if moved suddenly to a new location—don’t panic, they usually grow back once the plant adjusts!

🪴 Potting Mix
Use a well-draining, fertile potting mix. A standard indoor plant compost amended with a little perlite works well. Ensure the pot isn’t excessively large, as Ficus actually prefer being slightly “snug” in their containers.

🌿 Fertilizer
Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month from March to October. Avoid feeding in the winter when growth slows down. High-quality foliage feeds will help keep the green parts of the leaves vibrant, providing a sharp contrast to the white variegation.

❌🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Ficus Starlight is toxic to dogs and cats. The sap (latex) can cause skin irritation, and ingestion leads to oral irritation, drooling, and vomiting. Keep it out of reach of pets that like to brush against or chew on low-hanging branches.

🌬️ Air Purifying
It is a powerhouse for indoor air purification. It is specifically cited by NASA for its ability to filter out common household toxins such as formaldehyde, xylene, and toluene, making it as functional as it is beautiful.
