Description

💧 Watering

Keep the potting mix consistently lightly moist, allowing the top 1–2cm to dry before watering again. During Malta’s hot summers, check the soil regularly, but never leave the roots sitting in water. Filtered or rainwater is preferable when available, as Calatheas can be sensitive to minerals found in tap water.

☀️ Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, particularly Malta’s intense summer sun, as this can scorch the foliage and cause its beautiful pink colouring to fade. Avoid very dark locations, which may also reduce the intensity of the leaf colour.

🍃 Foliage / Growth

This compact, clump-forming plant is grown primarily for its spectacular colourful foliage. New leaves emerge from the centre of the plant, gradually creating a dense display. Good humidity is important for maintaining healthy leaves, as dry air can cause brown or crispy edges.

🪴 Potting Mix

Use a light, moisture-retentive but well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter. A combination of quality indoor plant compost, perlite, and orchid bark provides good moisture retention while allowing sufficient airflow around the roots.

🌿 Fertilizer

Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.

🐕🐈 Pet Safety**

Calathea ‘Crimson’ is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it an excellent choice for pet-friendly homes.

🌬️ Air Purifying

Calathea ‘Crimson’ contributes to a pleasant indoor environment through its lush foliage and natural transpiration. It is primarily valued for its exceptional ornamental foliage rather than as a substitute for proper ventilation or indoor air filtration.
