Celebrate the Season with a Fresh Christmas Tree!

The holidays are here, and what better way to embrace the Christmas spirit than with bringing a real, fresh Christmas tree into your home? At Sherries Estates, we believe that nothing sets the scene for a warm, festive atmosphere like the beauty and scent of a fresh tree.

Why Choose a Fresh Christmas Tree?

There’s something undeniably special about a fresh-cut Christmas tree that an artificial one just can’t replicate. Here are a few reasons why you should consider bringing a real tree home this Christmas:

Authentic Holiday Scent

Experience the delightful scent of a real Christmas tree. The fresh, piney aroma of our trees fills your home with the essence of the season, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that artificial trees simply can’t match.

A Sustainable Choice:

Concerned about the environment? Real Christmas trees are a surprisingly eco-friendly option. Christmas tree farms are typically replanted every year, ensuring a sustainable cycle. Artificial trees, on the other hand, are often made from non-biodegradable materials and can end up in landfills.

A Beautiful Centerpiece for Your Home

Two of the most popular varieties available in Malta are Abies nordmanniana (Nordmann Fir) and Picea abies (Norway Spruce). Both fill your home with that unmistakable festive scent and natural beauty, but they do need proper care to stay fresh through the season.

Abies Nordmanniana (Nordmann Fir)

Thick, glossy needles that stay on the tree longer.
Softer needles—very child- and pet-friendly.
Excellent needle-retention even when the indoor environment is warm.
Usually more expensive, but longer-lasting.

Picea Abies (Norway Spruce)

Traditional Christmas tree scent
Beautiful classic shape
More affordable and budget-friendly
Shorter needle-retention—needs more attention in Malta’s warm indoor conditions

Memories in the Making

Selecting a Christmas tree brings families together. It’s a fun outing where memories are made, from choosing the perfect tree to decorating it with your favorite ornaments. There’s something truly magical about picking out a fresh tree, bringing it home, and transforming it into a part of your holiday celebrations.

How to Care for Cut Christmas Trees Indoors in Malta

Because Malta’s indoor climate in December is warmer and drier than that of northern Europe, cut Christmas trees can dry out more quickly if not looked after properly. The good news? With the right care, your tree can stay green, hydrated, and needle-fresh right into January.

1. Prepare Your Tree the Right Way

Re-cut the base
Before placing it in water, saw off 2–3 cm from the bottom of the trunk.
Why? The sap seals the cut when the tree is first harvested, blocking water uptake. A fresh cut reopens the channels so it can drink again.

Place it in water immediately
Think of your tree like a giant bouquet of flowers. The moment it has a fresh cut, it needs water.

2. Use a Proper Tree Stand

A good Christmas tree stand should:
Hold plenty of water (ideally 3–4 litres)
Allow you to check the water level easily
Keep the tree stable (important when doors, fans, or excited pets are nearby!)

Our selection of tree stands can be placed inside a pot or bucket so you can keep the water in the container.

3. Keep Your Tree Hydrated

This is the most important step. How much water do they drink?
For the first 24–48 hours, a cut tree can absorb up to 1 litre per day. After that, around 0.5 litres per day, sometimes more in a warm Maltese home.

Always keep the base submerged. If it dries out even once, the tree seals up again and stops drinking.

Tip: Check the stand twice a day for the first two days, and daily after that. No additives, sugar, or gimmicks are necessary, just fresh water.

4. Choose the Right Spot Indoors

Maltese homes can get warm in December (especially if you use heaters), which speeds up drying. To extend the life of your tree;
– Keep it away from heaters, fireplaces, AC units, and warm appliances.
– Avoid direct sunlight from south-facing windows.
– Choose the coolest corner of the room.
– Turn off nearby fans, they increase evaporation.

5. Managing Decorations and Lights

Opt for LED lights as they stay cool and will not dry out your tree. You should also avoid heavy ornaments, especially on Picea abies, whose needles drop faster and whose branches can be slightly more brittle. Spread lights and ornaments evenly to keep everything balanced and upright.

6. Dispose of the Tree Responsibly

When the holidays are over, some local councils in Malta offer green-waste collection. Trees can be chipped for mulch, avoid throwing them in mixed waste if green disposal is available

Check with your local council for the latest collection guidelines.
