Description
Rhynchospermum, botanically known as Trachelospermum jasminoides and commonly called Star Jasmine, is a beautiful evergreen climber with glossy green foliage and masses of highly fragrant, star-shaped white flowers. It is exceptionally well suited to Malta’s Mediterranean climate and is ideal for covering walls, fences, pergolas, and trellises.
💧 Watering
Water regularly while the plant is establishing, allowing the upper soil to dry slightly between waterings. Once established, Star Jasmine is reasonably drought-tolerant, although deep watering during Malta’s hot, dry summers encourages healthier foliage and flowering. Container-grown plants require more frequent watering.
☀️ Light
Thrives in full sun to partial shade. A sunny position encourages the most abundant flowering, although some afternoon shade can be beneficial in very hot, exposed locations. It also grows successfully in brighter shaded areas but may produce fewer flowers.

Star Jasmine is a vigorous evergreen climber with glossy, dark green leaves and wonderfully fragrant white flowers, typically appearing from late spring into summer. Provide a trellis or other support for climbing and prune after flowering to control its size and encourage dense, bushy growth.
🪴 Potting Mix
Plant in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. For container growing, use a quality potting mix and choose a sufficiently large pot with good drainage.
🌿 Fertilizer
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring as active growth begins. A second light feeding during late spring or early summer can support vigorous growth and abundant flowering, particularly for plants grown in containers.

Star Jasmine is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a good choice for pet-friendly gardens. Its milky sap may cause mild skin irritation in sensitive individuals, so gloves can be useful when pruning.
