The Campanula portenschlagiana ‘Take’ is a premium, deep-violet version of the classic Dalmatian Bellflower. This variety is a superstar for Maltese limestone walls and rocky planters because it is native to the Dalmatian mountains, meaning it feels right at home in our Mediterranean climate.

Description

💧 Watering
It prefers to stay lightly moist. While it is more drought-tolerant than the ‘Takion’ or ‘Takesimana’ varieties, it will stop flowering if the roots bake in dry soil. In a Maltese summer, water it deeply when the top 1–2 cm of soil feels dry. Avoid overhead watering; aim for the base to keep the dense foliage from trapping humidity and rotting.

☀️ Light
Thrives in bright, indirect light or partial shade. In Malta, it can handle full morning sun, but it absolutely needs protection from the scorching afternoon heat. If kept as an indoor “gift plant,” place it on a cool, bright windowsill away from direct heaters or AC drafts.

🍃 Foliage / Growth
Features small, heart-shaped, vivid green leaves that form a dense, low-growing carpet. The ‘Dark’ series is prized for its intense, deep purple-blue flowers that are more saturated than the standard species. It is a vigorous “spiller,” making it perfect for hanging baskets or cascading over the edge of a ħajt tas-sejjieħ (rubble wall).

🪴 Potting Mix
Needs excellent drainage. It loves a gritty, alkaline-leaning soil, which makes it very well-suited to Malta. A mix of standard potting soil with a handful of coarse sand or crushed limestone grit is ideal to keep the roots happy.

🌿 Fertilizer
Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half-strength every two weeks during the spring and early summer. Once the main flowering flush is over, reduce feeding to once a month.

✔🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Non-toxic. Like other Campanulas, it is safe for cats and dogs, so you don’t need to worry if your pet takes a curious nibble of the trailing bells.

However, be advised that the consumption of any plant material may cause vomiting and gastrointestinal upset for dogs and cats. Sherries will not be held accountable to any symptom. If you believe that your animal is ill or may have ingested a poisonous substance, please contact a vet immediately.

🌬️ Air Purifying
Mainly used as an ornamental “living carpet.” It is highly attractive to bees and butterflies, providing a rich nectar source during the spring months in Malta.
