Description
☀️ Light
Full sun to partial shade. In Malta, it loves the morning sun but appreciates a bit of “dappled” shade during the scorching 3:00 PM heat. If kept in deep shade, it won’t produce many flowers.
💧 Watering
Moderate and consistent. It likes its soil to stay slightly moist. In the height of a Maltese summer, you’ll likely need to water it every 1–2 days. If the leaves start to turn yellow and drop, it’s usually a sign of overwatering or poor drainage.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
It is a scrambling shrub, not a true climbing vine. It won’t “grab” a wall on its own, so you’ll need to tie it to a trellis or a railing. The leaves are a beautiful, glossy, deep green.
🪴 Potting Mix
Use a rich, well-draining potting soil. It likes organic matter (like compost), but it needs the water to flow through freely. It does very well in large terracotta pots on Maltese balconies.
🌿 Fertilizer
Heavy feeder. To keep it blooming from spring all the way to autumn, feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2 weeks during the growing season.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Safe! Unlike “False Jasmine” (Trachelospermum), the Jasminum sambac is non-toxic to cats and dogs.
However, be advised that the consumption of any plant material may cause vomiting and gastrointestinal upset for dogs and cats. Sherries will not be held accountable to any symptom. If you believe that your animal is ill or may have ingested a poisonous substance, please contact a vet immediately.
