Description
☀️ Light
Full sun. It needs at least 6–8 hours of direct, baking sun to stay healthy. If kept in the shade, it will become “leggy,” turn gray-green, and lose its intense aroma.
💧 Watering
Low watering needs. In the ground, it barely needs any water once established. In pots, water only when the soil is completely dry.
The Killer: Overwatering is the only way to kill it. If the roots stay wet in a humid Maltese winter, the plant will turn black and die.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
Needle-like leaves that are dark green on top and silvery underneath. It can be Upright (reaching 1–2 meters) or Prostrate (trailing over walls). It produces tiny blue or white flowers that the local Maltese bees absolutely love.
🪴 Potting Mix
Sandy and gritty. It loves the alkaline, limestone-heavy soil of Malta. If potting, mix 1 part soil with 1 part sand or fine gravel (żrar).
🌿 Fertilizer
None needed. Rosemary actually prefers “poor” soil. Too much fertilizer makes the leaves less flavorful for cooking.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Safe! It is non-toxic to cats and dogs. In fact, it’s often used as a natural flea repellent in some gardens.
