Description
💧 Watering
Water thoroughly when the top 2cm of soil feels dry, but be careful not to overwater, as they are prone to stem rot. In the heat of a Maltese summer, they prefer to be kept slightly more moist than the common zonal geranium but still require excellent drainage.
☀️ Light
They thrive in bright, filtered light or partial shade; unlike common geraniums, the Regal variety can struggle in the intense, direct midday Maltese sun. A spot that receives morning sun and afternoon shade is perfect for keeping the blooms from scorching.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
Features attractive, stiff, and jagged-edged green leaves that are slightly scented. They have a more upright, shrubby growth habit compared to trailing types and benefit from a light trim after their main flowering flush.
🪴 Potting Mix
Requires a high-quality, well-draining potting compost with added perlite or grit to ensure aeration. Since they dislike “wet feet,” avoid using heavy garden soil which can become compacted in pots.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed with a high-potash liquid fertilizer (like a tomato or rose feed) every two weeks during the spring and early summer. This provides the energy needed to produce those massive, showy flower clusters.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Like all Pelargoniums, they are mildly toxic to dogs and cats if ingested, potentially causing vomiting or skin irritation. It is best to keep them on tables or plant stands out of reach of curious pets.
🌬️ Air Purifying
While primarily a decorative outdoor or conservatory plant, they contribute to a fresh environment by releasing oxygen. Their slightly fuzzy leaves are also effective at trapping fine dust particles on balconies.
