Description
💧 Watering
Water regularly after planting to help establish the roots. Once established, Gazania is highly drought-tolerant and only needs occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods. Avoid overwatering, as it prefers dry conditions.
☀️ Light
Gazania thrives in full sun and requires at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day. The flowers open fully in bright sunshine and may close during cloudy weather or at night.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
This low-growing, spreading plant forms attractive clumps of silvery-green foliage and produces an abundance of colourful flowers from spring through autumn, and often for even longer in Malta’s mild climate. Regularly remove spent blooms to encourage continuous flowering and maintain a tidy appearance.
🪴 Potting Mix
Plant in light, well-draining soil or a quality potting mix with added sand or grit. Excellent drainage is essential, as Gazania does not tolerate waterlogged soil.
🌿 Fertilizer
Gazania requires very little feeding. Apply a balanced fertilizer once in spring, or feed lightly every 6–8 weeks during the growing season if grown in containers. Avoid excessive fertilizing, which can reduce flowering.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Gazania is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a good choice for pet-friendly gardens and balconies.
However, be advised that the consumption of any plant material may cause vomiting and gastrointestinal upset for dogs and cats. Sherries will not be held accountable to any symptom. If you believe that your animal is ill or may have ingested a poisonous substance, please contact a vet immediately.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Gazania is grown primarily for its colourful flowers rather than its air-purifying qualities. Its blooms attract bees and butterflies, helping to support pollinators and a healthy garden ecosystem.
