Description
☀️ Light
Bright, indirect light. It can handle some direct morning sun, but the harsh Maltese afternoon sun through a window can “burn” the dark leaves. If it’s in a spot that’s too dark, it will become leggy and lose its lower leaves.
💧 Watering
Moderate. This is a “set it and forget it” plant. Water only when the top half of the soil is dry.
Warning: It hates soggy soil. In winter, you might only need to water it every 2–3 weeks.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
Massive, glossy, oval leaves that are deep green (or nearly black in some varieties). It grows straight up on a sturdy trunk. Indoors, it can easily reach the ceiling if you let it!
🪴 Potting Mix
Use a well-draining, chunky mix. A standard indoor soil with extra perlite or orchid bark is perfect to keep the roots oxygenated.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during spring and summer. Don’t overfeed, or the leaves might grow too large and heavy for the stem to support.
❌🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Toxic. Like all Ficus, it contains a milky sap that is an irritant to the skin and stomach of cats and dogs.
