Description
💧 Watering
Water regularly and deeply during its first few growing seasons to establish a deep root system. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but prefers consistently moist, well-draining soil during the hot summer months.
☀️ Light
It requires full sun to bloom heavily. Ensure it gets at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. Planting it in too much shade will severely reduce the number of flower clusters it produces.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
This is a highly vigorous, woody twining vine that grows very fast. It needs a very strong support structure like a sturdy pergola or a stone wall. Prune it twice a year—once in summer and once in winter—to control its size and encourage more flower buds.
🪴 Potting Mix
Thrives in deep, fertile, and well-draining soil. It can adapt to Malta’s alkaline soils, but adding some organic compost to the planting hole helps it thrive. If kept in a container, use a very large, heavy pot to accommodate its roots.
🌿 Fertilizer
Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which cause excessive leaf growth instead of flowers. Apply a fertilizer high in potassium or bone meal in early spring to stimulate a heavy flush of blooms.
⚠️🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Highly toxic to pets. The pods, seeds, and bark contain wisterin, which causes severe vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration in dogs and cats. Keep this vine away from curious pets.
🌬️ Air Purifying
While it is an outdoor vine, its dense summer canopy provides excellent cooling shade for hot patios and pergolas. The sweet, intense perfume of its spring blooms acts as a powerful magnet for local bees.
