Description
💧 Watering
Incredibly drought-tolerant once established. Its biggest enemy in Malta is “wet feet.” In pots, ensure the soil is completely dry before watering again. During a rainy Maltese winter, you shouldn’t need to water it at all. It actually thrives on neglect; overwatering will quickly lead to root rot.
☀️ Light
It demands full sun. It needs the heat and intensity of the Mediterranean sun to produce the essential oils that give it its signature scent. If kept in the shade, it will become thin, woody, and lose its vibrant green color.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
Features needle-like, evergreen leaves that are highly aromatic. It produces clusters of pale blue flowers in spring and summer that are a magnet for bees. Its trailing habit makes it perfect for spilling over the edges of stone walls, “balustrades,” or hanging baskets.
🪴 Potting Mix
Requires a gritty, free-draining, alkaline soil. It loves the natural limestone characteristics of local Maltese soil. For pots, mix a standard potting medium with plenty of coarse sand, grit, or even crushed limestone to mimic its rocky coastal home.
🌿 Fertilizer
Rosemary actually prefers “lean” soil. Very little fertilizer is needed; a light feed of a balanced fertilizer in early spring is more than enough. Too much nitrogen will reduce the concentration of those delicious aromatic oils.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Rosemary is non-toxic to dogs and cats. In fact, it is often used as a natural flea repellent in some pet shampoos! While most pets will ignore the tough, needle-like leaves, it’s a very safe plant to have at ground level.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Beyond basic oxygen production, the volatile oils released by the leaves (especially when brushed against or moved by the wind) have antimicrobial properties. It acts as a natural “scent diffuser” for your terrace, masking city smells with a fresh, herbal fragrance.
