Description
Portulaca ‘Sun Jewel’ is a vibrant, low-growing succulent that produces masses of colourful, rose-like flowers throughout the summer. Exceptionally heat and drought tolerant, it is one of the best flowering plants for Malta’s hot, sunny climate, making it perfect for pots, borders, rock gardens, and hanging baskets.
💧 Watering
Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Once established, Portulaca is highly drought-tolerant and thrives in Malta’s dry summers. Avoid overwatering, as excess moisture can cause root rot.
☀️ Light
Portulaca loves full sun and requires at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day. The flowers open fully in bright sunshine and may close during cloudy weather or at night.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
This low-growing, spreading succulent produces fleshy green leaves and an abundance of brightly coloured flowers in shades of pink, yellow, orange, red, white, and bi-colours from late spring until autumn. Remove spent blooms occasionally to keep the plant looking its best, although many varieties are self-cleaning.
🪴 Potting Mix
Use a light, sandy, well-draining potting mix, such as one formulated for succulents or cacti. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed lightly once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Avoid overfeeding, as excessive nutrients encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety
Portulaca ‘Sun Jewel’ is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a suitable choice for pet-friendly gardens and balconies.
However, the consumption of any plant material may cause vomiting and gastrointestinal upset for dogs and cats. Sherries will not be held accountable to any symptom. If you believe that your animal is ill or may have ingested a poisonous substance, please contact a vet immediately.
🌬️ Air Purifying
Portulaca is valued for its colourful flowers and exceptional drought tolerance rather than its air-purifying qualities. Its nectar-rich blooms also help attract bees and other beneficial pollinators to the garden.
