Description
💧 Watering
Water deeply and regularly during the first year to build a strong, deep root system. Once established, they are highly drought-tolerant and handle the dry Maltese summer well. For potted trees, water thoroughly whenever the top 5 centimeters of soil dry out.
☀️ Light
They require full, direct sunlight to thrive and produce a heavy harvest of sweet berries. They love the intense Maltese sun and withstand heat easily. Plant them in an open area that gets at least six hours of sun daily.
🍃 Foliage / Growth
They feature large, bright green, heart-shaped leaves that turn yellow in autumn before dropping for winter. They grow very quickly and form a wide, spreading canopy that provides excellent shade. Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant to keep its shape under control.
🪴 Potting Mix
They are highly adaptable and grow in almost any soil type, including poor or alkaline earth. They perform best in rich, deep, well-draining soil. If grown in a pot, use a very large, heavy container to support their strong, vigorous root system.
🌿 Fertilizer
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer once in early spring to kickstart new growth. Do not over-fertilize with high-nitrogen mixes, or the tree will produce lots of leaves but very little fruit.
🐕🐈 Pet Safety**
The mature, ripe fruits and leaves are non-toxic to dogs and cats. However, eating the unripe green berries or chewing on twigs containing the milky white sap can cause mild stomach upset in curious pets.
🌬️ Air Purifying
The massive summer canopy acts as an exceptional natural air filter, trapping urban dust and blocking wind. It also provides a vital, delicious food source for local wild birds and helpful garden pollinators.
